Honda Recalls 1.4 Million SUVs and Light Vehicles Due to Faulty Seatbelts

Honda, one of the world's leading automobile manufacturers, is recalling several of its latest SUV models and light vehicles due to a seatbelt issue. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported that the driver and front passenger seatbelts in these vehicles may not latch correctly, potentially putting occupants at risk in the event of an accident.

According to Honda's report, the seat belt buckle channel for the driver and front passenger seat belts were manufactured out of specification, which caused interference between the buckle channel and the release button. This interference could lead to the release button becoming stuck or difficult to unlatch, preventing the seatbelt from properly securing the occupant in the event of a crash.

Furthermore, the issue is compounded by the fact that the buckle channel's surface coating may deteriorate over time, causing the release button to shrink against the channel at low temperatures. This increased friction can make it even more challenging to unlatch the seatbelt, further increasing the risk of injury in the event of an accident.

The recall affects several of Honda's latest SUV models and light vehicles, including the 2020-2022 Honda Pilot, 2020-2023 Honda Odyssey, and 2021-2023 Acura MDX. In total, the recall covers around 1.4 million vehicles sold in the United States.

Honda has stated that it will notify affected owners of the recall by mail, and dealers will inspect and replace the seatbelt buckle assemblies as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in April 2022, with owners advised to contact their local Honda dealer as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.

This recall serves as a reminder of the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and the need to promptly address any issues that may arise. Seatbelts are a critical safety feature in any vehicle, and ensuring they are functioning correctly could mean the difference between life and death in the event of an accident. Honda's quick response to this issue is commendable, and it is hoped that this recall will help to prevent any injuries or fatalities resulting from faulty seatbelts in these vehicles.
